About Glasgow Afghan United

GLASGOW Afghan United (GAU) was founded in 2004 to promote the values of unity, equality, peace and diversity in Scotland by supporting the Afghan community and other diverse ethnic minority groups.

Glasgow Afghan United (GAU) provides education and training to refugees, asylum seekers and other Afghan and ethnic minority people about their rights and responsibilities in Scotland. We work to support the full participation of New Scots in all aspects of civil society. GAU promotes awareness to the wider community about Afghan and ethnic minority culture and tradition, with a special focus on teaching these values to young ethnic minority people.

Glasgow Afghan United Women's Empowerment Programme has been instrumental in changing the lives of local women in the North of the city by offering a safe space to learn and connect. Supported by Glasgow Life & Maryhill & Summerston Community Sports Hub with funding secured from Glasgow Mental Health and Well-being Fund, Go Cycle Glasgow Fund & European Capital of Sport Funding the organisation has developed an accessible Multi-Sport Activity and Leadership Programme.

The programme has supported over 50 women with opportunities to access cycling, badminton and tennis, which for many it was their first time participating in the activity. As well as the benefits of the women taking part in sport and physical activity for health and wellbeing, the main aim of programme is to invest in learning and to successfully develop and empower a strong female volunteer workforce with sports leadership skills, who can confidently deliver activities to their peers, families and children and help build stronger healthy and active thriving communities.

GAU's membership is made up of parents, children, teachers, pupils, footballers, dancers, cooks, poets, workers, carers and more.
